Bank Upgrades with Unified Security Gateways

Union National Bank (UNB) serves as one of the leading domestic banks in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Established in 1982, UNB is the only bank that is jointly owned by the Governments of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with more than 50 branches and 110 ATMs throughout the UAE. As a responsible corporate citizen, UNB plays an active role in supporting the development of the local and international communities by sponsoring various events for sports, education, and the environment. UNB has ventured into Doha with a branch at the Qatar Financial Center and also is the first bank to open an office in Shanghai China. In 2011, UNB also received a license to operate in Kuwait.

UNB also plans expansion to create a presence in other geographic locations with strategic alliances that will add to shareholder value. However, Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) on the live network were unstable and prone to failure, which negatively affected customer services. Huawei’s USG2110-A-GW-W helped UNB build a highly reliable, stable network system that improved customer satisfaction.


UNB planned to optimize its existing ATM networks to better support its service development and improve customer satisfaction. However, UNB faced the following challenges in upgrading its various locations:

  • A number of ATM networks failed to accommodate existing business and future upgrade requirements.
  • Some UNB branches deployed household routers with low stability and high failure rates.
  • UAE telecom carriers provided fixed-line networks only covering a small area which required most ATMs to connect to the data center through 3G networks, leading to further network instability.
  • ATMs were costly to maintain since they were scattered throughout the UAE


After Proof of Concept (PoC) tests, UNB selected the Huawei USG2110-A-GW-W firewalls to upgrade its existing networks. These Huawei gateways establish an overall system of highly reliable, stable ATM networks and higher customer satisfaction. The units are now accessible via multiple modes, such as 3G and Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL), and offer a full range of Unified Threat Management (UTM) and Virtual Private Network (VPN) functions.

The firewall units were installed inside the ATMs with cables to external antennas to enhance signal strength. By leveraging multiple interfaces (E1/ADSL/3G/FE), the USG2110-A-GW-W allows ATMs to use IPSec VPN channels to communicate with the data center through 3G or wired networks. The units establish a dual-link redundancy between each ATM and the data center for preventing service interruptions.

The USG2110-A-GW-W is based on multi-core processors and a software-based Versatile Routing Platform (VRP). The units use multi-thread parallel processing technology to ensure high service processing capabilities, while improving network stability.


UNB is now ready for future expansion of its locations and services based upon a solid network system. The USG2110-A-GW-W gateways take full advantage of Huawei’s all-in-one design concept by integrating the functions of data security, routing, switching, VPN, and wireless services. This approach allows customers to easily deploy multiple services on the same node, and dramatically reduces costs for both initial network construction and long-term Operation and Maintenance (O&M).

Huawei’s USG2110-A-GW-W ensures the following benefits for UNB:

  • Improves network protection by adding security and Unified Threat Management (UTM) features to basic routing functions.
  • Considerably reduces system shutdown occurrences, improves network stability, and reduces maintenance costs.
  • Allows for future development of support services by accessing equipment via mobile access.
