Background

21Vianet is the largest third-party Internet infrastructure provider in China. Serving more than 2,000 enterprise customers, it provides hosting, network management, Content Delivery Networks (CDN), and cloud services. 21Vianet operates more than 80 distributed data centers in 44 cities around the world and manages more than 18,000 cabinets and 500 Points Of Presence (POPs). Its proprietary smart routing technology provides more efficient and reliable transmission and data exchange.

Challenges

Huawei provided it’s Data Center Integration Services Solution for a 21Vianet cloud data center co-located with the Daxing Starlight Cinema Center in Bejing, China. The center provides services such as hosting and sensitive data storage. Huawei’s solution provided planning, design, and verification services designed to reduce the TCO of the center.

With Huawei’s help, 21Vianet upgraded the data center with a number of stability, security, and reliability improvements. Upgrades included a comprehensive set of management and monitoring systems for unified management purposes and substantial energy efficiency and ecological improvements.

Defining business needs

Huawei experts developed a deep understanding of 21Vianet’s business needs to help them invest wisely, accelerate time-to-market, reduce O&M costs, and improve management efficiency, including:

  • System lifecycle considerations
  • Future plans

Requirements translation

Based on 21Vianet’s requirements, Huawei developed evolutionary paths and translated the needs into technology requirements that paced capabilities with growth and deferred capital and operating expenses until needed.

Design development

Using the translated requirements, Huawei determined the best design principles and developed a conceptual design, including architecture and engineering, using their innovative SAFE design methodology — Smart management, high Availability, Flexibly efficient and Energy saving. It provided an integrated, lifecycle solution to meet 21Vianet’s planning, design, and implementation requirements. The project had to be:

  • Safe and reliable
  • Standard and scalable
  • Feasible and cost-effective
  • High-quality and manageable

Using modular design and dedicated 3D modeling and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) design tools, Huawei made several recommendations to solve issues with construction, layout, and thermal distribution producing a design covering:

  • Equipment room layout
  • Power supply
  • Cooling
  • Energy efficiency

Laboratory verification and validation

Huawei validated project implementation and quality with pre-design verification and testing at Huawei’s own lab.

Implementation services

Huawei planned and managed implementation to ensure timely and cost-effective project delivery. The service entailed several aspects:

  • Project management: Huawei used robust, industry-recognized project management techniques and best practices to help keep the project on time and on budget
  • Milestone management: Huawei defined project milestones and took a series of key actions, such as early involvement of the delivery team and procuring key materials in advance, to ensure on-time or early project delivery
  • Procedure management: Based on specific project characteristics, Huawei analyzed key procedures and optimized delivery processes to speed up delivery
