In August 2016, Tencent, Inc. recorded a market capitalization of USD $246.35 billion, making Tencent China’s most valuable technology company. Founded in 1998, Tencent owns the popular WeChat social messaging App and also provides value-added Internet, mobile and telecom services, plus online advertising and gaming. It promotes its strategy of providing users “one-stop online lifestyle services.”
Tencentʼs service system includes 10 Internet Data Centers (IDCs) in China that serve more than 100 million online users. As a result, any network system interruption can cause huge losses. Tencent, therefore, has extremely high requirements for service network security and application availability.
In recent years, Tencentʼs online services have been challenged by widespread, uncurbed Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. These feature simple attack behaviors but bring serious damage and changeable application-layer attacks on protocols such as HTTP, HTTPS, SIP, and DNS. Traditional security solutions (such as firewalls and IPS) have underperformed in protecting Tencentʼs enormous online services. Online equipment not only failed to support system throughput, but also became bottlenecks to system performance. In addition, the equipment could not precisely identify attacks so activating defenses further degraded network performance and online services.
Tencent urgently needed a security solution that included:
High performance: Defenses needed to provide high-performance 10G transmission to protect small-packet traffic for emerging services such as network gaming and online multimedia services.
High scalability: Performance also needed to be flexible and scalable in order to meet changing service requirements and stay current with service innovations as well as complex and changeable network security environments.
High availability: The security solution must support Tencentʼs service operations and ensure both system security and user experience.
Lower O&M costs that could significantly improve Tencentʼs bottom line. As a result, a security solution must:
After strict tests in labs and online operation appraisals, Tencent chose Huaweiʼs anti-DDoS solution and deployed it in its IDCs. The Huawei solution effectively copes with traditional and application-layer attacks, as well as attacks in IPv6 and IPv4 hybrid networks. In addition, Huawei’s anti-DDoS research and maintenance team continuously traces and studies DDoS technology to ensure that its anti-DDoS solution remains advanced enough to cope with changing security threats.
Seven-layer detection algorithm: Based on Big Data analysis of 26,000 traffic samples from around the world. It enables the Huawei solution to defend against hundreds of different attacks and accurately identify attacks by layer.
Advanced, multi-core distributed hardware architecture:
The Huawei solution makes it possible for Tencent to:
Because Huaweiʼs anti-DDoS solution provides the security Tencent needs, it ensures the continuity of the companyʼs services. This enables Tencent to concentrate on online service innovation and operation.
