Nigeria is one of the ancient civilizations in Africa and enjoys the reputation of “the cradle of sub-Saharan Africa.” The Federal Republic of Nigeria is Africa’s largest population, with the largest economy, as well as the largest oil production and export country. With proven oil reserves, this Nigerian region is the second largest in Africa and the tenth in the world. The natural gas reserves are first in Africa and eighth in the world.
These statistics mean rich energy, with great potential for Nigeria’s economic development. After nearly 20 years of smooth development, Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has surpassed South Africa and became the first economic country in Africa. In particular, the ICT industry has developed rapidly and has become part of the digital transformation that supports Nigeria’s economic growth. Simultaneously, the development of electronic finance, eCommerce, and eGovernment continues to advance. At present, there are 90 million Internet users in Nigeria, ranking No. 1 in Africa and No. 10 in the world. A boom of technologies such as ICT and eCommerce has spurred Nigeria’s demand for cloud data centers.
To attract and solve the urgent requirements that high-end government and enterprise customers need for cloud data centers, the leading ISP provider in West Africa, Cloud Exchange Datacenter Limited (CEDL), plans to further increase investments in data center projects. In order to meet the requirements of the Nigerian cloud data center, Huawei plans to gradually radiate its ISP services to other countries in West Africa.
In the first phase, CEDL plans to deploy two Tier IV Design and Facility Certification Co-location data centers in Nigeria and Ghana to attract high-end tenants. In addition, the data centers need to be scalable to satisfy future capacity expansion. Phase One of CEDL’s Nigerian data center is expected to be operational in June 2018.
The goal is to build a data center with high reliability, simplicity, and flexible capacity expansion in a very short time. Huawei, with extensive experience with both ICT technologies and developing data center technologies, provides the FusionModule1000B prefabricated data center solution tailored to customer demands. Huawei’s solution uses a 3.6-meter high cube and complies with a Tier IV Designed Facility. The solution includes Huawei’s high-efficient modular Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), PAC, and Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM+) software system. All these advanced facilities are prefabricated in the factory and pretested before delivery. In addition, Huawei provides exclusive Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) to guarantee reliability and quality.
The DCIM+ is an intelligent network management system that can implement preventive maintenance. GIS location technology improves the speed of locating faults as well as Operations and Management (O&M) efficiency. Mobile App monitoring, simplifying management from inside to outside, easily provides the running status of data centers with a large number of devices, and eliminates traditional manual O&M methods, making data center management more simple and efficient. Based on an AI iCooling energy saving algorithm, the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of the same condition is reduced by 8%, achieving the ultimate in energy savings.
This modular and scalable design allows deployment of more racks within the same space and reduces the customer’s initial investment. Additionally, the design PUE is lower than 1.5, which will bring tangible benefits to CEDL in the long run. Huawei also works with customers to beautify the appearance of the prefabricated modular box, meeting customers’ requirements for an attractive look of the commercial production center.
Tier IV design and construction double certification meets CEDL requirements for high standards and high reliability of new data centers. The modular elastic architecture reduces the construction time and supports fast service rollout within the time specified by CEDL. Moreover, the solution supports stacking and capacity expansion in the same space, reducing the initial investment risks for CEDL.
It is worth mentioning that the CEDL Nigerian data center has won the TIERⅣ design certification issued by the internationally well-known data center certification authority UPTIME, becoming the first co-location data center in the country to obtain this highest reliability certification.
With a long history and culture, abundant natural resources, and a huge domestic consumer market, Nigeria has great potential for future development. Now, Huawei’s prefabricated modular data center with the highest standard certification in the industry is about to be put into use.
