Launched in 1998, the huge Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) was built on an artificial island. The airport has 182 parking spaces for aircraft and two runways in operation 24/7. HKIA is one of the world’s busiest crossroads. It ranks number 1 in cargo volume and, as a gateway to mainland China, it is also one of the planet’s busiest passenger hubs. The airport serves nearly 50 million passengers annually.
More than 100 airlines offer a total of 1,000 flights daily. On average, a commercial aircraft is taking off or landing every 90 seconds. With this intense volume of air traffic, any interruption of the power supply would cause big disruptions and economic losses.
HKIA knew that measures had to be taken to ensure the stable operation of the airport power supply facilities and reduce the flight delays caused by the interruption of the logistics system. The airport needed an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) suited to the power requirements of the logistics system and fully adaptable to the environmental conditions.
To eliminate the risks of power failure for the logistics system and ensure the stable operation of the airport power supply facilities, HKIA chose Huawei’s UPS5000-E UPS after multiple stringent tests.
The dual controller and redundant fan design of UPS5000 series UPSs eliminate any single point of failure. The system can also accept a wide range of input voltages and frequencies. Even if the power source to the HKIA logistics system is far from ideal, the UPS delivers high-quality power to keep the flight-related logistics system fully functional. The modular design of the UPS5000-E uninterruptible power supply allows for faster maintenance, which means better power continuity.
The system can withstand the challenging environmental conditions at the airport because a special coating prevents corrosion. In addition, a predictive alarm system indicates potential failures before they occur via regular auto-checking of critical components. This feature alerts technicians to replace problematic components before the airport experiences an UPS failure. The UPS thus reduces dependence on manual maintenance operations and reduces O&M costs.
The simple, efficient, and reliable features of the Huawei UPS fully adapted to the special environment of HKIA. Since the UPS deployment, the reliability of the airport’s logistics system has increased by 6 percent. This improved uptime directly translates into fewer delayed flights and greater customer satisfaction.
In addition, the UPS power efficiency has increased from 90 percent to 96 percent, adding up to about 40,000 kWh of electricity saved annually. At a cost of $.12 to $.24 per kWh, this improvement equates to a cost reduction of anywhere from $5,000 to $10,000 per year at the airport.
