Prof. Xiong, President of Soochow University and Director of the Institute of Biology and Medical Sciences, has served as: Deputy Director of the Key Laboratory of Molecular Virology under the Ministry of Health; Assistant to the President at Shanghai Medical University (now the Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University); Vice-Dean of the Graduate School and Dean of Fudan College at Fudan University; Director of the Institute for Immunobiology of Fudan University; and Director of the Center for Gene Immunization and Vaccine Research. Prof. Xiong was elected as delegate to the 13th National People’s Congress, and was amember of the 10th, 11th and 12th National Committees of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. He also served as Vice-Chairman of the 12th and 13th Shanghai Municipal Committees of the China Democratic League, and Vice-Chairman of the 11th and 12th Jiangsu Provincial Committees of the China Democratic League.
Under the supervision of Prof. Wen Yumei, a renowned virologist and Academician of the China Academy of Engineering, Prof. Xiong received his PhD in Microbiology from Fudan University in 1992. He conducted his post-doctoral research at the French National Institute for Health and Medical Research (INSERM), and was once a visiting scholar at the University of California, San Diego, USA. His areas of academic specialty are molecular immunology and virology. As a project leader, he has led several major projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China, key national infectious disease projects, the national 863 project, the national 973 project, major projects of Jiangsu Province, High-tech Industry Development Projects of Jiangsu Province, and more. His publications include 213 SCI papers in top-tier journals, including Nature Biotechnology, Immunity, Nature Microbiology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, Hepatology, Circulation Research, the Journal of Virology, and the Journal of Immunology. He has 36 national invention patents and 17 authorized patents. He is the Chief Editor and Deputy Chief Editor of 15 textbooks and monographs, and has participated in the compilation of 22 textbooks. Prof. Xiong was awarded first place in the Shanghai Science and Technology Progress Award, first place in the Ministry of Education Science and Technology Progress Award, third place in the State Science and Technology Progress Award, and third place in the State Natural Science Award. He was also recognized with the China Youth Science and Technology Award, the National Young and Middle-Aged Medical Science and Technology Star award, and the Hong Kong Qiu Shi Outstanding Young Scholar Award, also achieving second place for the Young Teacher Award of Huo Yingdong Education Foundation, and the Special Prize of Baosteel Education Foundation Outstanding Teacher. He has been included in the Trans-Century Training Programme Foundation for the Talents by the State Education Commission of China, the first and second tiers of the “Hundred Million Talents Project” of the Ministry of Personnel, the Shanghai Rising Star Program, the Shanghai Hundred Talents Program, the Shanghai Program of Excellent Discipline Leaders, the Shanghai Leading Talents Program, and the Jiangsu Province Innovation and Entrepreneurship Talents Program. He is also a winner of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, a member of the 6th, 7th, and 8th Academic Discipline Review Groups of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, and a recipient of the special allowance of the State Council of China.
