The Guangdong provincial branch of the China Construction Bank (CCB) has more than 1,000 business outlets throughout the province. To better address its client needs, the bank launched many innovative network-based financial services.
The Operational Data Storage Branch (ODSB) is responsible for loading, extracting, and querying CCB’s general ledger, third-party depository, housing fund, and credit card data. The ODSB is also the data storage, processing, and service center for management applications that support integrated development and system deployment of systems such as performance appraisal, client analysis, and statistical information.
CCB uses reserved time windows for data loading. They take approximately 5 hours per day to load data during non-peak hours, which is longer than the reserved time. This pushes the remaining processing into the next day. As a result, services are sometimes unable to query information, adversely affecting business continuity.
CCB’s system has been running for years with fixed processes for file decryption, data loading, and service access. A change to any step would involve changes to all the processes. CCB required that all existing IT systems be used without changing business processes or how the applications were operated.
By testing system performance level by level, Huawei discovered the long data loading periods were caused by the existing storage device’s high latency. To improve performance, Huawei provided an OceanStor Dorado5100 Storage System with an all-flash storage array to improve storage response and system efficiency.
The OceanStor Dorado5100 integrates Solid-State Disks (SSDs) into the core to improve flash storage performance. Huawei optimized performance by migrating application data to the Dorado5100.
In CCB’s ODSB system, µs-level latency was maintained under full loads, shortening the average storage response time from 11 ms to 1 ms. The optimization not only enhanced database response, but also removed server and storage performance bottlenecks. Consequently, CCB could complete the original 5-hour data loading tasks in 2 1/2 hours.
The OceanStor Dorado5100’s dual-controller, fully redundant design can withstand single points of failure and support interruption-free parts replacement and online upgrades for better system reliability and maintenance. It is a perfect fit for ODSB’s application cluster, supporting multi-pathing software and data protection functions such as snapshot and replication.
Business processes remain unchanged. With a Storage Area Network (SAN)-based open architecture, the Dorado5100 delivers excellent compatibility and stability. It did not require application migration or changes to business processes and connected to CCB’s ODSB environment with only minor impacts similar to those occurring during a routine offline inspection.
The implementation took approximately 5 hours, with no impact to ongoing applications during the migration.
In addition to the unchanged business processes, Long Jiang, IT O&M Manager of CCB-Guangdong was pleased. “CCB-Guangdong specifically required acceleration of applications in our ODSB system to ensure system assets are available when it matters most. Huawei’s all-flash array OceanStor Dorado5100 shortens our data loading time from 5 hours down to 2.5 hours, ensuring optimum service performance during the daytime.”
