Guofu Guangqi Adopts Huawei’s Smart Module Infrastructure

Background

Shanghai GFGQ Cloud Computing Technologies, Inc. had a mission. The Shanghai-based software R&D company, referred to as Guofu Guangqi, wanted to build the largest global online education mall — CNMooc.house. The idea was to model it after Alibaba’s Taobao Marketplace Consumer-to-Consumer (C2C) online shopping mall.
For more than 10 years, Guofu Guangqi has worked with Germany’s Hasso Plantner Institute (HPI), affiliated with the University of Potsdam, on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Over that time, the R&D team at Guofu Guangqi has set its sights on cloud computing infrastructure for online Global Education Platform (GEP) construction. 
The plan called for the integration of multiple social network tools and digital resources to implement high-integration, high-density, high-bandwidth, and high-speed IDC broadband access and Big Data processing technology. The main goal of the endeavor was to provide fair and free education to people throughout the world as a means to eliminate poverty and improve the happiness index for everyone.
The German institute caught the attention of the United Nations (UN) when HPI’s OPENHPI platform won the 2014 Brandon Award, regarded as the ‘Oscar’ in education.
After meeting with the UN at the 2014 Global City Information Forum and agreeing to build the openUNE MOOC platform for the UN, Guofu Guangqi signed a strategic cooperation agreement with HPI and the UN Institute of Training and Research Shanghai Training Center. The three parties agreed to establish the Shanghai Joint Innovation Center based on Industry 4.0 technology.

Challenges

Industry 4.0’s impact has accelerated the development of data centers, which are the most important infrastructure for cloud computing and Big Data. Internet service providers, such as Qihu 360, Aliyun, WeChat, and YY Live have become important Guofu Guangqi customers. Therefore, Guofu Guangqi data centers not only need to provide infrastructure for their MOOC platform but also services for these vendors.
“Guofu Guangqi chooses vendors that have established a good credit record, own proprietary brands with reliable products and excellent service, and offer the lowest prices,” said Pan Dong, the company’s General Manager of the Internet Business Department.
According to the construction plan, the Guofu Guangqi data center project required 20 thousand cabinets scheduled for deployment from 2015 through 2017.

Solution

After conducting intensive research on multiple modular data center solutions and their applications, Guofu Guangqi chose Huawei’s power-saving modular data center infrastructure. The most important aspect of Huawei’s prefabricated Smart modules is their short construction period and easy installation.
The first phase of Guofu Guangqi data center called for the deployment of 602 Information Technology (IT) cabinets. The features are as follows:
• The initial investment cost can be cut by at least 60 percent
• The power of a single cabinet is 4 kW, totaling 2,408 kW for the 602 IT cabinets
• Smart modules can reduce power consumption by 4.2 million kWh each year
• The Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of a Smart module can save up to USD 315,000 per year in electricity costs

Benefits

In the first two months, Huawei delivered 43 Smart modules that are characterized by the following:
• Digital, network-based, and intelligent
• Power distribution and cooling fully utilizing modularization and tailored to business requirements
• Intelligent management system for uniformed monitoring and managing of power, environment, and security systems
• Scalable physical architecture and modular design principles for intelligently managing a single data center, as well as multiple data centers scattered across different regions
The Shanghai Guofu-Huawei Modular Data Center Project was awarded “The Modular Deployment Award” at the Asia Pacific Awards of Datacenter Dynamic in 2015 because of its innovative modular construction mode, high efficiency and rapid deployment.

“Using Smart modules can significantly reduce initial investment costs and lower the PUE,” Mr. Pan Dong said. “In the future, the company will continue to use modular data center infrastructure and intends to strength cooperation with Huawei for additional projects.”
