Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) is the world’s largest genomics organization. Its 4 regions — China, Asia-Pacific, North and South America, and Europe and Africa — contribute more than 50% of the information to the global genome sequencing community. BGI contributed 1% of the Human Genome Project’s reference genome and 10% of the sequencing information for the International HapMap Project among other projects.
Genome sequencing uses High-Performance Computing (HPC) to sequence, splice, and compare gene data. Then, it distributes the genomic information and related system data to address issues in the biological, medical, and industrial sectors.
BGI owns more than 200 sequencers generating about 10,000 samples for genome sequencing of newborns every day. BGI must process massive amounts of data when comparing the samples with 10+ TB of data collected from tens of thousands of normal newborns for differential statistical analysis.
BGI required a storage system with high read and write bandwidth to handle the sequencer data. Up to 300 TB to 1 PB of data was generated each month and the BGI gene pool accumulated approximately 22 PB of data. BGI required a storage system that could:

The system provided a total of 800 MB/s of stable bandwidth per node and 60 PB of total capacity. It can also accommodate up to 288 nodes for current and future storage needs.
