Huawei Boosts Shuohuang Railway's Annual Capacity

Background

Shenhua Group Corporation is a Fortune 500 company and the world’s largest coal supplier. Shuohuang Railway is Shenhua’s most extensive heavy-haul railway, with 588 kilometers of track that includes 77 tunnels. Completed in 2012, this rail line is steadily increasing in capacity toward a goal of 350 million tons annually.

Challenges

To meet overall capacity goals, Shuohuang Railway has upgraded section capacities and the number of arrival-departure tracks at each station. Additionally, the headway between 10,000-ton trains has been reduced to 11 minutes, and higher-capacity trains are used more often. The railway now routinely carries 20,000-ton trains that are more than 3,000 meters long with four power locomotives distributed at the front and middle of the train. Coordinated control of different parts of the train and multiple-locomotive synchronization were required to ensure safe operation.

Shuohuang Railway also needed a unified communication network to carry mission-critical services, such as train dispatching, train tail control, trunking communications, and video surveillance. The original analog wireless communication systems had limited coverage, poor reliability, and insufficient bandwidth.

Solution

In the Shuohuang Railway project, Huawei collaborated with the China Railway Eryuan Engineering Group and the China Academy of Railway Sciences to work out technical plans, interfaces, and standards. This collaboration ensured interoperability between service systems.

Using LTE technology, Huawei’s Railway Operational Communication Solution has extended Shuohuang Railway’s transmission range and reduced delay. Huawei’s full-redundancy solution ensures 99.999% system availability.

The solution includes dual-network coverage and optical transmission for safety-related services, such as synchronous operations and train tail control. The solution also covers services such as trunking communication and video surveillance. A Quality of Service (QoS) mechanism helps implement zero-interruption performance for critical railway operations.

In this solution, Huawei implements a unique train terminal direct-routing technique. Even if servers connecting the multiple locomotives of a train are down, synchronous control information can still be transmitted between the locomotives.

Huawei’s solution relies on sophisticated LTE cellular technology to provide wide coverage and low latency. The combination of a flat LTE architecture with high-speed optical backhaul reduces the overall communication latency to less than 200 milliseconds, ensuring real-time synchronous control of the multiple locomotives in heavy-haul trains. With full redundancy for all networking equipment and assured QoS for mission-critical services, Shuohuang Railway has the reliable, high-performance communications system needed to operate heavy-haul trains safely on tight schedules.
