Huawei Builds Core of Metro Info Network

Background

Chongqing Rail Transit (CRT) is a large, state-owned operator of the commuter system in Chongquing, a sprawling city at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers in southwestern China. The first line of the CRT, or ‘the Metro,’ began service in 2005. The Metro is now comprised of subways, surface trains, and monorails. By the end of 2016, the length of the system totalled 132 miles (212.6 kilometers). As the system grew, the CRT realized that it needed to build a high-quality Passenger Information System (PIS) as part of its communications network.

Challenges

A Passenger Information System is a multimedia, synthesized information system based on multimedia network technology and the core computer system. Plans were to install PIS display terminals in station halls, railway platforms, and rail cars in order to keep passengers informed of train schedules and other information. As a result, it would be one of the most important systems operating in the Metro.

Increased data traffic volume

The CRT knew that equipment would be needed to be able to meet current and future network requirements as data traffic increased. New modules would have be installed to provide higher bandwidth; more equipment, applications, and offices also would be needed. However, the system would have to be able to protect the company’s previous investments.

Security and reliability

To guarantee the security and reliability of the PIS, the communications network would have to provide network-layer security measures. The network would need to operate in tandem with the PIS security system in order to prevent unauthorized access and operations. The PIS also required redundant design for key equipment and network links: This would prevent a single point of failure and ensure quick recovery if a fault occurred.

Solution

The CRT decided to use leading Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to develop the PIS. The company chose Huawei to design and build the network, which included a control center and PIS nodes on each Metro line.

Huawei proposed a comprehensive solution that included high-speed data processing and forwarding, and a high-security design to protect the Passenger Iinformation System.

Huawei switches

Two S9300 LAN switches: These high-end terabit routing switches are designed for multiple converged services. Since the control center needs to process a massive amount of information and applications, Huawei deployed these switches in the network core to ensure high speed and stable data access for users.

S7700 LAN series switch: This Smart Routing Switch provides multiple-service routing, 10 GE to 100 GE switching capabilities, and on board radio frequency Access Controllers (AC) for wireless communications.

Huawei gateways

Unified Service Gateway USG5120 BSR: Provides high-speed data forwarding and security functions such as Reverse Path Forwarding (RPF), which guarantees network security and prevents attacks from viruses and Trojans.

United Service Gateway USG5320: Serves as the firewall to ensure data access security for internal users. The USG5320 provides functions such as the Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) and antivirus technologies that protect the system from Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks. Uniform Resource Locator (URL) filtering protects agains malicious code, and application software restriction enables ‘whitelisting’ that guards against malware.

Huawei reliability

1+1 redundancy: Adopted for all key equipment to prevent network failures caused by a single point of failure. Additionally, Huawei’s innovative, hardware-level OAM + BFD technology was used to detect network failures quickly, within 10 ms, and perform fast end-to-end network switchovers within 50 ms. This greatly improves network reliability.
