Background

Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport (CDIA) operates as an airline hub in China’s Sichuan Province. Shuangliu Airport is the fifth busiest airport in mainland China for passengers and cargo. In 2014, the airport handled over 37 million passengers.

During the construction of the T2 terminal, CDIA officials recognized the need for a stable and secure information network to ensure efficient airport operations, as well as a scalable network for future business needs.

Challenges

The network infrastructure for the T2 terminal building included these requirements:

  • Advanced network design and technology

The network design must support network openness, security, and scalability and reserve open, standard interfaces to support future upgrades. Enhanced security along with easy management and seamless service expansion were also required to ensure stable airport operations in the future.

  • Compatible network architecture

The network must support interoperability between devices and technologies and facilitate deployment of new products and features. The network design and devices must use standard technologies and protocols to maximize interoperability and return on investment.

  • Easy management

The network deployed in T1 and T2 must be designed, constructed, and managed in a centralized manner. Simplified network architecture must lower operating and maintenance costs, provide stable network operation, and allow quick fault location and repair.

Solution

The Huawei solution features:

  • Scalable architecture, reliability, and security

Reliability: Core LAN switches set up a cluster that scales up to 256 Gbit/s bandwidth. The innovative clustering technology uses redundant core nodes and non-blocking transmission. Inter-chassis link aggregation improves link efficiency and prevents single-point failures.

Scalability: High-end S9312 LAN switches as core switches enable the network to smoothly upgrade and expand.

Security: The security firewall deployed on the service network egress reduces security risks and secures the network by authenticating remote access users and encrypting outgoing data. This fortifies the security of network devices, the network perimeter, key servers, and data streams.

  • Unified platform for centralized management of the T1 and T2 terminal buildings

The Huawei solution uses standard protocols on all nodes for seamless integration between the newly constructed network in the T2 terminal building and the T1 terminal building. Huawei’s eSight unified network management platform manages LAN switches and routers throughout the airport and monitors the status of devices deployed in the surveillance center. This facilitates unified service distribution and increases maintenance efficiency.
