  • CNPC Boosts Enterprise Management Expertise

Background

China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) is an integrated international energy company that specializes in oil and gas exploration and production, engineering technology services, petroleum engineering construction, petroleum equipment manufacturing, financial services, and new energy development. It is also one of leading oil and gas producers and suppliers in China. CNPC ranked number 3 globally, according to the Fortune Global 500 list released in July 2016.

CNPC is committed to being a world-class integrated international energy company. To that end, the company maintains strategic development initiatives, innovation-driven growth, a combination of quality and productivity, and the transformation of development models. These actions also contribute to CNPC’s short-term goals of becoming a leading green and sustainable company by 2020 with improved competitiveness and profitability as well as world-class business outcomes.

Challenges

In the energy industry, an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system has become an important tool for enterprises to adjust strategies and make business decisions. The key to improving ERP productivity lies in quickly analyzing massive amounts of data generated from every corner of the business, then turning information into actionable insight.

CNPC’s ERP system integrates core business processes that support multiple sectors such as exploration, oilfield, refining, sales, pipeline, and equipment manufacturing. ERP also underpins the financial statement systems of approximately 100 secondary units.

The increasing use of the ERP system and the continued convergence of services at CNPC have resulted in skyrocketing amounts of system data. However, the low speed of data extraction from the data warehouse was unable to support quick user analytics. Consequently, reports could not be generated quickly, and the latest key performance indicator data could not be obtained in time. The input/output, read/write speeds of the database became major bottlenecks of system performance.

Due to slow data analytics and report generation, it was impossible to make real-time analytics and decision making as well as release business information in time. This negatively affected the company’s operations and management.

Solution

CNPC chose Huawei’s SAP HANA Appliance Solution to address their challenges. This solution is built on Huawei’s FusionCube appliance with its hyper-converged infrastructure. As part of this solution, industry-leading SAP HANA memory database software running on Huawei’s innovative software and hardware platforms brings unprecedented user experience with high-speed performance.

The 63 nodes in 11 server chassis, in tandem with the FusionStorage system’s distributed block storage technology, high-performance ES3000 PCIe SSD cards (functioning as log volumes), and a 56 Gbit/s InfiniBand network, brought maximum benefits to CNPC.

Benefits

  • Data persistence latency has been reduced to as low as 150 μs, 50 percent to 75 percent lower than the industry average;
  • Up to 1,000 concurrent tasks meet the needs of large-scale concurrent access traffic;
  • Approximately sixfold increase in storage network bandwidth and 50 percent higher database loading performance;
  • Complex query time (from 18 billion data entries) shortened from 17 seconds to 3 seconds.
  • Because Huaweiʼs SAP HANA Appliance Solution improves ERP productivity, it ensures that CNCP will continue to be a profitable, world-class enterprise. This enables CNPC to concentrate on its goal of becoming a leading green and sustainable company by 2020.]
