General Practice Training Queensland (GPTQ) is a public, not-for-profit company providing vocational education and training for General Practitioner (GP) doctors on behalf of the Queensland government. GPTQ also manages Queensland’s healthcare information systems, which serves a population of 3.5 million people and 239 hospitals.
Australia invests heavily in healthcare insurance support, including training GPs that want to pursue the specialty via the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) Program. GPTQ also trains and authenticates services for doctors outside Australia.
The volume of medical and training materials has grown over the years and the greater volume strained GPTQ’s existing systems. To cope, GPTQ planned to use its primary site to provide services for south central Queensland and build 2 branch sites for northern and eastern Queensland. GPTQ also needed a Disaster Recovery (DR) center because DR was not accounted for with GPTQ’s legacy systems.
GPTQ faced several challenges.
GPTQ did not have unified management for storage devices with different performance levels at primary and branch sites and they wanted to centrally operate, maintain, and manage them.
GPTQ’s legacy systems were difficult to scale and unable to meet future requirements.
Data security was weak because data from the 2 branch sites was not backed up.
GPTQ needed to improve O&M efficiency, reduce O&M costs, and cut CAPEX.
Huawei delivered an asynchronous DR storage solution in which mid-range and high-end storage systems interworked with each other. One OceanStor 18500 high-end storage system was deployed for training data at the primary site and 2 OceanStor S5500T mid-range systems were installed for the branch sites.
The sites were centrally managed and maintained by Huawei’s visualized software management platform, DeviceManager. DeviceManager provides a Graphical User Interface (GUI) allowing users to easily allocate and manage storage resources without memorizing complex Linux commands.
GPTQ provides high-speed training services to approximately 60,000 full-time healthcare personnel, so free data flow between mid and high-end storage systems without third-party software was important.
An OceanStor 18500 at the primary site provides up to 8 controllers delivering up to 7 PB of capacity, meeting GPTQ’s growing needs for approximately 5 years. Two OceanStor S5500T storage systems provided up to 4 controllers and 2 PB of capacity for service development needs.
To mitigate threats to critical data and for DR, the Huawei solution enabled critical data to be asynchronously replicated from the OceanStor 18500 at the primary site to the S5500T storage systems at the branch sites. This significantly reduced DR networking costs.
Huawei’s storage systems have been incident-free since being put into operation and provided several important benefits.
Huawei’s DeviceManager provided high O&M efficiency and low O&M costs because of its central management capability. Huawei also cut CAPEX with its DR networking design.
The new system satisfies service growth needs for the next 5 years thanks to the excellent scalability provided by up to 8 controllers and 7 PB of capacity.
