OceanStor 9000 Supports Genetic Research

2016/2/1 0:00:00

Background

Beijing Genomics Institute (BGI) is the world’s largest genomics organization. Its 4 regions — China, Asia-Pacific, North and South America, and Europe and Africa — contribute more than 50% of the information to the global genome sequencing community. BGI contributed 1% of the Human Genome Project’s reference genome and 10% of the sequencing information for the International HapMap Project among other projects.

Challenges

Genome sequencing uses High-Performance Computing (HPC) to sequence, splice, and compare gene data. Then, it distributes the genomic information and related system data to address issues in the biological, medical, and industrial sectors.

BGI owns more than 200 sequencers generating about 10,000 samples for genome sequencing of newborns every day. BGI must process massive amounts of data when comparing the samples with 10+ TB of data collected from tens of thousands of normal newborns for differential statistical analysis.

BGI required a storage system with high read and write bandwidth to handle the sequencer data. Up to 300 TB to 1 PB of data was generated each month and the BGI gene pool accumulated approximately 22 PB of data. BGI required a storage system that could:

  • Provide 10+ PB of capacity
  • Allow linear capacity and performance growth
  • Streamline system expansions
  • Support quick system deployments without affecting ongoing services

Solution

After testing functions and performance, BGI purchased a six-node OceanStor 9000 Big Data Storage System for Phase I of the project. With a fully symmetric scale-out architecture, the system leveraged technologies including:

  • Clustering
  • Automatic load balancing
  • Global caching
  • Consolidated and managed system resources

Configuration

The system provided a total of 800 MB/s of stable bandwidth per node and 60 PB of total capacity. It can also accommodate up to 288 nodes for current and future storage needs.

Deployment

The OceanStor 9000 is easily deployed within half a day. A node can become functional within 60 seconds.

Benefits

Shorter data computation periods

A single node of the OceanStor 9000 can provide up to 800 MB/s of bandwidth, improving storage efficiency by more than 20% and enabling sequencers to quickly write original data.

Flexible resource expansion

The OceanStor 9000 supports a single namespace, accommodates up to 288 nodes, and provides 60 PB of storage capacity.

Linear growth and easy management

The OceanStor 9000 allows linear growth as nodes increase and can be easily deployed within half a day. BGI can add a node and it would become functional within 60 seconds.
